How to Compare Savings Accounts in Pakistan

A practical checklist for comparing savings accounts: product terms, fees, access, tax and deposit protection, with a hypothetical net-return calculation.

Correction — September 17, 2026: We removed unsupported provider-specific rates, minimum balances and feature claims, including the description of a SadaPay savings product. We also removed an unsourced current inflation figure and blanket statements about deposit protection. This is now a comparison method, not a verified ranking or a current rate table.

Start With the Purpose of the Money

An account for next month's rent has different requirements from an account holding a longer-term goal. Write down when you need the money, how much you expect to keep, and how you will withdraw it. Access and fees matter alongside returns.

Keeping spending and savings records separate can make budgeting easier, but opening extra accounts is not automatically beneficial. More accounts can mean extra fees, minimum-balance requirements and administrative work.

Identify the Actual Product

Write down the provider's legal name and exact account name. A bank deposit, electronic-money wallet, term deposit and investment fund are not interchangeable. An app's savings label does not establish its legal structure, guarantee a return or establish deposit-protection eligibility.

Ask who holds the money and which terms govern the product. If a wallet offers access to a partner's investment product, read the partner's documents too. Do not assume every balance in the same app has identical protections or withdrawal rules.

Use the [State Bank of Pakistan](https://www.sbp.org.pk/) as an official starting point for banking and regulated-institution information. Check the relevant regulator and provider documents for the specific product; this guide does not certify any provider or product.

Collect the Documents Before Comparing Rates

For each candidate, obtain the latest product terms or key fact statement, schedule of charges and applicable rate or profit declaration from the provider's official website or branch. Record the document date and the period it covers.

Use this checklist:

  • •Exact product name and eligibility requirements.
  • •Minimum opening amount and any required ongoing balance.
  • •How returns are calculated and when they are credited.
  • •Whether a quoted percentage is annualised, historical, indicative or contractually fixed for a particular term.
  • •Applicable balance tiers, promotional expiry dates and qualifying conditions.
  • •Account, card, transfer and withdrawal charges.
  • •Access restrictions, notice periods and early-withdrawal consequences.
  • •Applicable tax and zakat treatment for your circumstances.
  • •Deposit-protection eligibility and exclusions, if relevant.

If information is unavailable, mark it as unknown rather than estimating a competitive-looking figure. Get clarification from the provider before depositing money.

Compare Net Returns, Not Just Headline Percentages

Here is an invented example to show the method, not an offer from any Pakistani institution.

Suppose you maintain Rs. 100,000 for one year. Fictional Account A pays a simple annual return of 8% and charges Rs. 1,200 over the year. Fictional Account B pays 7% and has no fees in this example.

  • •Account A: Rs. 100,000 × 8% = Rs. 8,000 gross return; minus Rs. 1,200 fees leaves Rs. 6,800.
  • •Account B: Rs. 100,000 × 7% = Rs. 7,000 gross return; with zero assumed fees, Rs. 7,000 remains.
  • •Under these assumptions, Account B leaves Rs. 200 more despite its lower headline rate.

These figures exclude tax, zakat, compounding and balance changes. They are not current product rates or a prediction. For a real comparison, replace every assumption with documented terms and apply the relevant deductions. Some products calculate returns using daily balances or tiers, so a simple annual multiplication may not match the actual payment.

Check Access Before Using an Account for Emergencies

Ask how long it takes to move money to your spending account and what happens outside normal branch hours. Check transfer limits and any withdrawal restrictions. A term deposit or product with an exit charge may not suit money you need immediately.

Choose an emergency reserve based on essential expenses, income stability, dependants and existing obligations. A target of several months of essentials is a planning starting point, not a requirement or personalised recommendation. Someone with irregular income may need a different buffer from someone with reliable support and stable earnings.

Islamic and Conventional Products Need Separate Reading

Do not assume every conventional deposit has a permanently fixed rate or every Islamic account pays a guaranteed monthly return. Read the contract, calculation method, declaration period and applicable terms for the exact product.

If Shariah compliance is important to you, consult the provider's product-specific Shariah documentation and a qualified adviser where needed. This article does not make religious rulings or certify products.

Check Deposit Protection Rather Than Assuming It

Protection can depend on the institution, depositor, product, exclusions and the scheme's current rules. A wallet balance or investment product should not be described as an insured bank deposit without checking its legal status.

Consult the [Deposit Protection Corporation Pakistan](https://www.dpc.org.pk/) for official information and confirm eligibility with the institution. This guide does not quote a current protection limit or promise coverage for any named product. Do not assume opening several accounts at one institution multiplies any available coverage.

Inflation: Use a Clearly Dated Comparison

A positive account return does not necessarily mean increased purchasing power. For an approximate annual comparison using aligned periods, the real-return formula is:

Real return = (1 + nominal return) ÷ (1 + inflation) − 1.

For a hypothetical 8% nominal return and 10% inflation, 1.08 ÷ 1.10 − 1 is approximately −1.82%, before fees and tax. These are invented figures, not a statement of today's inflation or deposit rates. Subtracting inflation from the nominal return gives an approximation, not the exact result.

Your household's expenses may also rise differently from a national inflation measure. Use this calculation as context, not as a promise that a particular account will preserve purchasing power.

Make a Small, Documented Shortlist

Compare two or three actual products using the same expected balance and time period. Keep source documents alongside your notes. Prioritise terms you understand, access that meets your needs and costs you can account for.

Review the comparison when a rate or fee changes, a promotional offer ends or your financial needs change. There is no universal best account for every saver.
